Crystal Meth Laws

Laws concerning crystal methamphetamine range in both state and federal jurisdictions. However, the bottom line is that if you are found possessing, making, or selling crystal meth, the law is not on your side.

Crystal meth is a highly addictive drug and very dangerous. However, it’s ingredients used to be very easy to come by for many people. Methamphetamine is also known/referred to on the streets as: “crystal meth”, “crystal”, “meth”, “ice”, “shabu”, “speed”, “p”, “bunzun”, “singolah”, “tina”, “white”, “scanti”, “czecho” or, “crank”.

The United States passed laws in 1983 prohibiting possession of equipment and precursors of meth production. In 1986 the U.S. Government passed the Federal Controlled Substance Analogue Enforcement Act in an effort to reduce the quickly spreading popularity of crystal meth use and production. As an amendment to the Patriot Act, today you will notice that most pharmacies now control and monitor more strictly the purchase of common over the counter medications which have been used to make crystal meth and even require the purchasers legal identification to keep on file to monitor the amount of these common medications.

Under federal laws, you can be charged and receive a very lengthy sentence if you are involved in any one or a combination of any of the following charges with crystal meth:

  • Unlawful manufacturing;
  • Importing;
  • Exporting;
  • Trafficking;
  • Possession;
  • Continuing Criminal Enterprise (CCE)
  • Intent to Distribute

* NOTE: Any base charge above can also be enhanced based upon other factors, the location of the violation or other items/individuals involved (ie, attempt or conspiracy, near a school or protected location, involving underage or pregnant individuals, with use of a weapon or if a weapon is found, with use of a communication facility, paraphernalia, etc)
